Area IV has a wonderful event for those of you who might not have to work a
9-5 in the middle of October. It’s right on the coast at St. Simons
Island, GA, October 28-30, 2008. We like to call it your “on land cruise”,
as you can walk the beach, ring bells without getting seasick, and enjoy
some leisure time as well. I will personally assure no further hurricanes,
just sunny skies and sea breezes. The repertoire is all Level 1 to 2+ with
no concert, so it is a low pressure learning event.

The registration fee INCLUDES meals, room and the event. There is no
better bargain. Bring your spouses, partners, sisters, brothers,
significant others, …not sure about pets!

Clinicians are Monika Durbin & Bobby Griffin, two wonderful musicians
from the Pensacola area that also do much more than handbells. Both are
talented, spirited, youthful, engaging teachers. Seniors, you’ll love them!

Monika Durbin and Bobby Griffin are former members of Carillon, the
handbell choir of the University of Southern Mississippi directed by Dr.
Larry Smith. They have performed in concert tours and taught classes in
workshops and festivals all over the United States, and overseas in Japan,
France, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and
Germany. They also had the distinct privilege of ringing in BellFest, an
auditioned community handbell choir under the baton of esteemed composer and
clinician Dr. Donald E. Allured.
The duo currently uses their handbell expertise in MoBo Bells,
performing concerts of music for handbells and harp, and providing
instruction through handbell workshops and festivals. They also use their
solo and small ensemble ringing skills by playing in Canticle, a non-profit
organization that brings live music to residents of nursing homes, hospices,
and other care facilities throughout the Pensacola area. They are both
active members of the Pensacola Music Teachers Association and are on
faculty at the Hillcrest Baptist Church School of Music: Monika teaches
flute, piano, and lever harp; Bobby teaches flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon,
and saxophone. Through the Hillcrest School of Music, the duo co-directs
community youth handbell choir Resonance!, which they founded in 2007.
