It seems like only last week when I was standing in the “boy’s” line at Clemons Elementary School waiting for our elderly principal, Ms. Eunice Jones to come outside and ring the big brass hand bell notifying us it was time to begin our school day.

I remember Pearl Harbor, WWII, Atomic bombs, the Korean War, Jonas Salk, Civil Rights marches, JFK, MLK, Oswald, Watergate, Vietnam, Twin Towers, Katrina and Iraq/Afghanistan.

These old eyes have seen a lot but never in all my days have I witnessed the auto loan double standard theatrics and negatives by Sen. Bob Corker and Rep. Marsha Blackburn.

During Ms. Jones’ day, we had unbiased public officials with fortitude who actually cared about steel-toed shoe assembly line workers and Tennessee’s cornbread and pinto beans working class in general.

I gladly trace back to the late J. Percy Priest, J. Carlton Loser, Estes Kefauver, Ross Bass, Captain William. R. Anderson and still active Dick Fulton as people who fit this category. They were elected gentlemen who actually remembered where they came from and didn’t surrender to Potomac River Fever or the Washington sherry wine sipping circuit.

For some reason I was always afraid of Ms. Jones but if I could see her just once more standing erect ringing that big brass hand bell, I would give her a kiss on the cheek and be one blessed and happy senior citizen — she also had great fortitude.
