“Handbells Are For Everyone” will be held at the Brookwood Community on Jan. 16-17.

The workshop encourages the special needs community to utilize handbells as a viable musical enrichment and performance opportunity.

Anyone interested in teaching hand bell music is encouraged to attend.

Cathy Taylor, Sue Graves and Joyce Klinck will serve as clinicians during the workshop.

Taylor is the director of the Woodson Handbell Choir, which is part of the specialized music program for developmentally disabled students in the Abilene, Texas school district.

She also directs the Bell Peppers, a new bell choir at disability Resources Inc., which provides residential and vocational services for adults with developmental disabilities.

Graves and Klinck are co-directors of the Joybells at Melmark, a caring community in Berwyn Pennsylvania that provides residential, educational, therapeutic and recreational services for children and adults with special needs.

Graves is also a music therapist and music teacher at Tempo! Music Therapy Services.

Two specific methods will be taught during the workshop:

•Method 1: Writing color coded letters on a scroll which correspond to the assigned colors on the bells and pointing to the chart in the rhythm of the song.

•Method 2: the director uses pointing, hand cues and sign language to conduct the handbell choir.

The cost to participate is $50, which covers the workshop and two meals.

Registration is at the Brookwood Community’s visitor center from 2-5 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 16.

The Brookwood Community is located at 1752 FM 1489 in Brookshire.
