(Charleston) The Kanawha Valley Ringers bell choir is preparing for the 2009 season. That means there’s music to learn and new members in the choir.

After auditions earlier this week, Director Dale Miller said he liked what he heard.

“Watching this group pull together and really gel together, I’ve seen some things happen that have gotten me very excited about what we’re looking at for this new season,” says Miller.

The group still has lot of practice and work before it makes debut though. Miller says the key to a bell choir’s success is that it has to sound like one flawless bell.

“A hand bell choir is one big instrument so everybody is a part of that instrument. We miss one person or we start missing notes then the instrument itself is not working right,” Miller explains.

According to choir member Allan Dyer, the uniqueness of the bell choir is what makes it frustrating at the same time.

“Even more than most music, it’s so hard to have a group of people to think as one person to make all of the parts fit together,” Dyer says.

However, he said for the choir’s first run sight read that night, he was feeling good about the upcoming season, too.

“It’s very exciting because it speaks very well of where we can go with this as really get use to working with each other and the new members start coming along with us and we start really gelling. It’s a very exciting prospect,” says Dyer.

The first concert this season for the Kanawha Valley Ringers will be in Akron, Ohio. Their local debut will be other bell choirs in the area on March 24th in Hurricane at the First Baptist Church.
