Evangel University will host the 28th annual Ozarks Area Handbell Festival Saturday, Feb. 21, in the Chapel Auditorium.

Clinician for the festival is Dolan Bayless, director of music ministries at the Kirkwood United Methodist Church.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and the schedule will include a question and answer workshop for handbell directors and choirs, as well as rehearsals for the concluding concert.

The 4 p.m. concert is free and open to the public, and will include three selections performed by a massed choir, as well as solo numbers by several individual choirs, a children’s chime choir and a youth handbell ensemble.

The massed choir will perform “Meditation on Beautiful Savior,” arranged by Cathy Moklebust; “Glorious Things of Thee are Spoken” by Franz Haydn, arr. by Linda McKechnie, and performed with organ and brass ensemble; and “Jesus We Want to Meet” by Charles Peery.

“This happy composition is based on several characteristics of African music,” said Beth McLellan. “The percussion instruments may be anything that makes noise — quite often the way our brothers and sisters in African churches do.”

For more information, contact festival coordinator Beth McLellan at 833-1727 or Lynne Hall 865-2815 ext. 7212, or go to www.evangel.edu/Academics/Music/Handbell.asp.
