Concert in aid of bell appeal

A POPULAR hand-bell ringing group will be ap-peeling to the audience at a concert in aid of a church bell appeal fund.

The Waverton Hand-Bell Ringers will make a guest appearance in concert with the appropriately named chamber choir Belle Voci (BV).

The proceeds from the concert will go to the Alvechurch Bell Restoration Appeal. More than £60,000 has to be collected so one bell can be recast and all the bell frames, which are in a serious state of repair, can be replaced.

The Tower Bell Ringers have been working hard to collect this huge amount and are now over two thirds of the way to the target. The rest of the money needs to be found within the next two years or the bells can no longer be rung.

Martin Wright, a member of the BV choir, said: “I heard the hand-bell bingers at a concert and was so impressed by the performance that I immediately thought how appropriate it would be to have them ring for us at Alvechurch in aid of the appeal.

“They are based near Chester which means a fairly lengthy journey so they will have at least 50 per cent participation in the concert There is quite a lot of interest in this area in hand-bell ringing but perhaps no-one has heard them played quite to this standard before which makes The Waverton Hand-Bell Ringers an amazing attraction.

The concert is on March 21 at St Laurence Church, Alvechurch. The concert starts at 7.30pm with the doors opening at 7pm. Tickets costs £10 to include interval refreshments. For more details, call Martin Wright on 0121 445 4335.
