COSHOCTON — The ninth annual Ring the Bells for Habitat Concert was held Sunday at The Presbyterian Church under the title of “Make a Joyful Noise Unto the Lord.”

“I’ve never been down for this before and I really enjoyed it,” said Peggy Mikesell of Coshocton. “I especially loved the last number where they all played together.”

Taking part in the event were handbell choirs from The Presbyterian Church, Grace United Methodist Church, West Lafayette United Methodist Church and Central Christian Church.

These choirs performed separately and together at the end under the direction of Rolanda Hunt, handbell director at Central Christian Church.

“The fun is having all the choirs together, which we often don’t get a chance to do,” she said.

The event was free, but donations were accepted to help benefit the Coshocton Chapter of Habitat for Humanity.

“Habitat is something I believe in, but I’m not good with a hammer and nails and a saw, so this is how some of us can contribute,” said Hunt.

Her husband, The Rev. Philip Hunt of the Central Christian Church and organizer of the event said they have raised about $5,500 over the history of the concert and last year $1,500 was raised to mainly go for the purchase of a fireproof cabinet to house important documents at Habitat’s main office in Coshocton.

“I saw an article in the Columbus Dispatch where they had a concert and I thought why can’t we have something like that here and it’s been very successful,” said Rev. Hunt.

Habitat public relations director Jane Mautz addressed the crowd in attendance and told them of the group’s plans to break ground on their seventh house in the area July 1 on Lynn Street and their eighth house before the end of the year on either Cemetery Street or McClain Avenue.

A clean up day of the Lynn Avenue site will be 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 11.

“It’s awesome. They don’t have to do this for us, they could donate to any of the local charities,” said Mautz of the concert. “I enjoyed it last year and I made sure to mark it on my calendar for this year.”

Mautz said they didn’t have a small need like the cabinet this year, but that all funds raised would go to the upcoming housing projects.

“Many families are one or two paychecks away from being homeless. A medical crisis or financial crisis could come along. What we’re dealing with are those struggling to own their own homes,” said the Rev. Tom Heil who presided over the offering.
